About the El Nino Phenomenon, BKMG Reminds the Threat of Failure to Harvest Agricultural Land

BONSERNEWS.com – Head of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Dwikorita Karnawati warned of the threat of crop failure on rain-fed agricultural land due to the positive El Nino and Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) phenomena which lead to drought.
This condition will disrupt national food security.
“Local governments need to take immediate mitigation and preparedness actions. Agricultural land is at risk of experiencing puso, aka crop failure due to lack of water supply during the plant growth phase,” said Dwikorita, Saturday, July 22, 2023.

Even so, Dwikorta said changes in sea temperature and current patterns during El Nino would provide a positive side for the fisheries sector.
“Usually it has the potential to increase fish catches. Opportunities from this condition must be utilized because it can support national food security,” he added.

Dwikorita said the El Nino and Positive IOD phenomena reinforce each other so that this year’s dry season can be even drier and rainfall in the low to very low category.
If rainfall is usually around 20 mm per day, then in the dry season this figure becomes once a month or even no rain at all.
The peak of this dry season is predicted to occur in August to early September with conditions that will be much drier compared to the 2020, 2021 and 2022 periods. ()
