MUI Reminds Government to Take Action to Give Permit for ASEAN-wide LGBT Gatherings

BONSERNEWS.com – The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) reminded the government not to give permission for the agenda for the meeting of ASEAN Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) activists in Jakarta.

“MUI reminds and urges the government not to allow and give permission for this event to be held,” said Deputy Chairperson of the MUI, Anwar Abbas, Tuesday 11 July 2023.

If the government allowed the agenda, he said, it would be the same as violating the provisions stipulated by the constitution. He then alluded to article 29 paragraph 1 of the 1945 Constitution which states that the Indonesian state is based on Belief in One Almighty God.

Anwar claimed that this activity was against the values ​​of religious teachings, especially the six religions recognized in Indonesia, namely Islam, Christianity, Catholicism, Hinduism, Buddhism and Confucianism.

“None of these religions tolerate LGBT practices,” he said.

Previously there was news about the planned meeting titled ASEAN Queer Advocacy Week (AAW) which will be held in Jakarta this month. The event was reportedly organized by the ASEAN SOGIE Caucus.
